Labaki stopped for a moment to look at Lamiov, really look at him. His mother always said that sometimes he let his ideas get ahead of him, and he knew a lot of the other kids thought he was weird for obsessing over old battles and military ships and stuff. But Lamiov’s eyes were shining, and a watery smile had taken over his face.

“Best friends forever,” Lamiov agreed, and Labaki smiled back, so big his face ached. “For the Ascendancy!”

Starlines collapsed back into pinpricks and the Grayshrike was immediately rocked by multiple violent explosions. 

“STATUS REPORT!” Senior Captain Irizi’in’daro yelled as she clutched the arms of the captain’s chair. “Ovinon, find out if we sustained damage! Vimsk, what in the Chaos did we walk into?!”

“Che’ri? Did you hear me?” Thalias inquired.

“Hm?”

“I asked what you want for dinner,” she repeated.

“I don’t care,” Che’ri mumbled, not even bothering to look up from her questis.

Frowning, Thalias crossed the sky-walker suite and sat down on the bed beside Che’ri. “Do you want to talk about what's bothering you?”

Che’ri’s face scrunched up, clearly embarrassed. “No, it’s silly.”

Thalias gently placed her hand on the girl’s knee, getting her to look up. “I’m sure it isn’t silly and you have a good reason for feeling the way you do.”
